Mason County is a county located in Michigan, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 28274. Its population was estimated at 28782 in July 2008, It is the 50th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is spread over 1241.86 square miles (3216.4 sq km), of which, 495.17 square miles (1282.48 sq km ) of it is land and 746.7 square miles (1933.94 sq km) of it is water, it is the 27th largest by area in the U.S. state of Michigan.

As of the census of 2000, there were 28274 residents, 11406 households, and 7878 families in the county. The population density was 57.1 people per square mile (22.05/kmē), it would be the 42nd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Michigan. There were 16063 housing units at an average density of 32.4 per square mile (12.51/kmē). The average household size was 2.43 people, and the average family size was 2.92 people. In the county Age distribution was 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 102.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 105.9 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 28782, The racial makeup of the county was 27814 White, 224 Black or African American, 241 American Indian, 95 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 403 from two or more races.
