Mason County is one of the 102 county of Illinois, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. Mason County had an official population of 16038 in 2000. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 15076, It is the 29th smallest in terms of population. The county encompasses an area of 563.37 mi˛ (1459.12 square kilometre ), of which, 538.94 square miles (1395.85 square kilometre) of it is land and 24.43 square miles (63.27 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 47th largest by size in Illinois. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Illinois.

The population density was 29.8 people per square mile (11.51/km˛), giving it the 19th least densely populated county among the Illinois. There were 7033 housing units at an average density of 13 per square mile (5.02/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.48 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.1 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 15076, The racial makeup of the county was 14817 White, 65 Black or African American, 45 American Indian, 41 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 108 from two or more races.
