Maryland is a state of the United States. As of 2000 the population was 5296486. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 5633597, It is 19th most populous in United States. It is spread over 12406.68 mi˛ (32133.15 square kilometre), of which, 9773.82 square miles (25314.08 square kilometre ) of it is land and 2632.86 square miles (6819.08 square kilometre) of it is water, making it United States's ninth smallest by total area. It is ranks 18 in the size of its inland waterways in United States.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5296486 people in the state, organized into 1980859 households, and 1359318 families living in the state. The population density was 541.9 people per square mile (209.23/km˛), it is fifth most densely populated state in United States. There were 2145283 housing units at an average density of 219.5 per square mile (84.75/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.61 persons, and the average family size was 3.13 persons. In the Maryland, 25.6% of the population was under the age of 18, 8.5% were 18 to 24, 31.4% were 25 to 44, 23.1% were 45 to 64, and 11.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males. The median age was 36 years, the median age of male residents at 34.9 and the median age of female residents at 37. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 5296486, The racial makeup of the state was 64.03% White, 27.89% Black or African American, 0.29% American Indian, 3.98% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, 1.96% from two or more races and 1.8% Other races.
