Martin County is a one of the county from Kentucky's 120 counties, located in Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 12578 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 11602, It is Kentucky's 27th least populous county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 230.81 mi˛ (597.8 square kilometre), of which, 230.7 square miles (597.51 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.11 square miles (0.28 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 27th smallest by total area among Kentucky's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12578 people in the county, organized into 4776 households, and 3621 families living in the county. The population density was 54.5 people per square mile (21.04/km˛), making its Kentucky's 63rd most densely populated county. There were 5551 housing units at an average density of 24.1 per square mile (9.31/km˛). The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.05. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 28.1% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 11602, The racial makeup of the county was 11468 White, 21 Black or African American, 11 American Indian, 10 Asian, 6 Native Hawaiian, and 86 from two or more races.
