Martin County is one of the 67 county of Florida, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 126731. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 138660, It is the 32nd most populous county in the U.S. state of Florida. It is spread over 752.79 square miles (1949.72 kmē), of which, 555.62 square miles (1439.05 kmē ) of it is land and 197.18 square miles (510.69 kmē) of it is water, making it Florida's 39th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 126731 people in the county, organized into 55288 households, and 36194 families living in the county. The population density was 228.1 people per square mile (88.07/kmē), making it the 22nd most densely populated county in Florida. There were 65471 housing units at an average density of 117.8 per square mile (45.48/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.23 persons, and the average family size was 2.71 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 18.6% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 28.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 138660, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 90.53% White, 5.91% Black or African American, 1.4% American Indian, 1.03% Asian, 0.14% Native Hawaiian, and 1% from two or more races.
