Marshall County is a county located in South Dakota, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 4576. Its population was estimated at 4320 in July 2008, making it South Dakota's 37th largest county. It covers total area of 885.63 sq mi (2293.77 kmē), of which, 837.71 square miles (2169.66 kmē) of it is land and 47.92 square miles (124.11 kmē) of it is water, making it the 35th largest by size in South Dakota. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4576 people in the county, organized into 1844 households, and 1252 families living in the county. The population density was 5.5 people per square mile (2.12/kmē), making its South Dakota's 34th most densely populated county. There were 2562 housing units at an average density of 3.1 per square mile (1.2/kmē). The average household size was 2.43 persons, and the average family size was 3.04 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 27% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 22.8% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.8 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 4320, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 91.13% White, 0.12% Black or African American, 7.82% American Indian, 0.12% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.81% from two or more races.
