Mariposa County is a county located in the United States of California. The county has a population of 17130 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 17976, It is the seventh smallest county by population in the U.S. state of California. The county encompasses an area of 1462.79 square miles (3788.61 sq km ), of which, 1451.12 square miles (3758.38 sq km) of it is land and 11.67 square miles (30.23 sq km) of it is water, it is the 32nd largest by area in the U.S. state of California.

The population density was 11.8 people per square mile (4.56/kmē), it is the tenth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of California. There were 8826 housing units at an average density of 6.1 per square mile (2.36/kmē). The average household size was 2.37 people, and the average family size was 2.86 people. The population's age distribution was 21.6% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 29.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 104.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.4 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 17976, The racial makeup of the county was 90.64% White, 1.2% Black or African American, 3.63% American Indian, 1.05% Asian, 0.14% Native Hawaiian, and 3.34% from two or more races.
