Marion County is a county located in the United States of West Virginia. Marion County had an official population of 56598 in 2000. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 56496, giving it the ninth largest population among West Virginia's county. The county spans an area of 311.49 miē (806.76 kmē), of which, 309.69 square miles (802.09 kmē) of it is land and 1.8 square miles (4.66 kmē) of it is water, it is the 12th smallest by area in the U.S. state of West Virginia.

The population density was 182.8 people per square mile (70.58/kmē), it is the tenth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. There were 26660 housing units at an average density of 86.1 per square mile (33.24/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.34 persons, and the average family size was 2.88 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 20.6% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 110.4 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 114.6 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 56496, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 94.75% White, 3.51% Black or African American, 0.21% American Indian, 0.55% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.96% from two or more races.
