As of July 2008, the estimated population was 33843, making it the 29th most populous county in South Carolina. The county encompasses an area of 494.09 mi˛ (1279.69 sq km ), of which, 489.06 square miles (1266.66 sq km) of it is land and 5.03 square miles (13.03 sq km) of it is water, it is the 11th smallest in terms of geographical size.

In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 27.6% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.4 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 33843, The racial makeup of the county was 14789 White, 18608 Black or African American, 116 American Indian, 130 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 198 from two or more races.
