Marion County is one of the 120 county of Kentucky, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 18212 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 19063, It is 59th most populous county in Kentucky. It has total area of 346.86 sq mi (898.36 sq km), of which, 346.39 square miles (897.15 sq km) of it is land and 0.47 square miles (1.22 sq km) of it is water, making it the 50th largest by size in Kentucky.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18212 people, 6613 households, and 4755 families residing in the county. The population density was 52.6 people per square mile (20.31/kmē), it would be the 64th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kentucky. There were 7277 housing units at an average density of 21 per square mile (8.11/kmē). The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.06. Age range in the county was well distributed with 25.2% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 102.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.6 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 19063, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 89.24% White, 8.96% Black or African American, 0.09% American Indian, 0.61% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 1.03% from two or more races.
