Marion County is a one of the county from Florida's 67 counties, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. Marion County had an official population of 258916 in 2000. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 329628, It is Florida's 15th most populous county. Its area is just over 1663.01 square miles (4307.18 square kilometre), of which, 1578.86 square miles (4089.23 square kilometre) of it is land and 84.15 square miles (217.95 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the sixth largest by area in the U.S. state of Florida.

As of the census of 2000, there were 258916 people in the county, organized into 106755 households, and 74637 families residing in the county. The population density was 164 people per square mile (63.32/kmē), making it the 30th most densely populated county in Florida. There were 122663 housing units at an average density of 77.7 per square mile (30/kmē). The average household size was 2.36 people, and the average family size was 2.79 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 21.4% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 24.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males. Its population was estimated at 329628 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 85.05% White, 11.89% Black or African American, 0.48% American Indian, 1.32% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.23% from two or more races.
