Maries County is one of the 115 county of Missouri, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. It is home to over 8903 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 9046, It is Missouri's 20th least populous county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 529.97 mi˛ (1372.62 square kilometre), of which, 527.73 square miles (1366.81 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.25 square miles (5.83 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 74th largest by area in the U.S. state of Missouri.

The population density was 16.9 people per square mile (6.53/km˛), it is the 26th least populated county in terms of population density. There were 4149 housing units at an average density of 7.9 per square mile (3.05/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.51 persons, and the average family size was 3 persons. In the county Age distribution was 26% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.9 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 9046, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 8779 White, 86 Black or African American, 52 American Indian, 12 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 117 from two or more races.
