Maricopa County is one of the 15 county of Arizona, located towards the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. It is home to over 3072149 people (2000 census). It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 3954598, It is the most populous county in the U.S. state of Arizona. It is spread over 9224.27 sq mi (23890.75 square kilometre), of which, 9203.14 square miles (23836.02 square kilometre ) of it is land and 21.13 square miles (54.73 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the fifth largest by area in the U.S. state of Arizona. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Arizona.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 3072149 residents, 1132886 households, and 763110 families in the county. The population density was 333.8 people per square mile (128.88/kmē), making its Arizona's most densely populated county. There were 1250231 housing units at an average density of 135.8 per square mile (52.43/kmē). The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.21. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 27% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.1 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 3954598, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 3473274 White, 194404 Black or African American, 87291 American Indian, 118549 Asian, 9336 Native Hawaiian, and 71744 from two or more races.
