Marengo County is a United States county located in the United States of Alabama. As of 2000 the population was 22539. Its population was estimated at 21055 in July 2008, making it Alabama's 20th smallest county. It covers total area of 982.85 mi˛ (2545.57 sq km), of which, 977.04 square miles (2530.52 sq km) of it is land and 5.8 square miles (15.02 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 11th largest by total area among Alabama's county.

In the county Population was distributed with 28.5% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 26% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 88.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 21055, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 47.7% White, 51.32% Black or African American, 0.09% American Indian, 0.21% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.66% from two or more races.
