Its population was estimated at 80641 in July 2008, It is 21st most populous county in Wisconsin. The county has a total area of 1493.87 mi˛ (3869.11 sq km), of which, 591.53 square miles (1532.06 sq km) of it is land and 902.34 square miles (2337.05 sq km) of it is water, it is the sixth largest by area in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in Wisconsin.

In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.5% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.1 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 80641, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 77288 White, 480 Black or African American, 412 American Indian, 1795 Asian, 34 Native Hawaiian, and 632 from two or more races.
