Manhattan City is one of the city of Riley and Pottawatomie counties, Kansas, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 44831 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 52284, making it the ninth most populous in Kansas. The city spans an area of 15.03 square miles (38.93 square kilometre), of which, 15.02 square miles (38.9 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 14th largest by area in the U.S. state of Kansas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 44831 people in the city, organized into 16949 households, and 8259 families residing in the city. The population density was 2983.9 people per square mile (1152.09/kmē), it is Kansas's tenth most densely populated city. There were 17690 housing units at an average density of 1177.8 per square mile (454.75/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.3 persons, and the average family size was 2.89 persons. The population's age distribution was 15.8% under the age of 18, 39.2% from 18 to 24, 24% from 25 to 44, 13.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 106.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.4 males. The median age of the city's population was 23.5 years, The median age of males was 23.4 years, for females the median age was 23.7 years. The racial makeup of the city was 39130 White, 2179 Black or African American, 214 American Indian, 1764 Asian, 33 Native Hawaiian, 929 from two or more races and 582 Ohter races.
