Malheur County is one of the 36 county of Oregon, located towards the Western Region (Pacific) of United States. Malheur County had an official population of 31615 in 2000. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 30907, It is the 20th largest in terms of population. Its area is just over 9929.99 square miles (25718.56 sq km), of which, 9887.09 square miles (25607.45 sq km) of it is land and 42.9 square miles (111.11 sq km) of it is water, making it Oregon's second largest county by total area.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 31615 people, 10221 households, and 7346 families residing in the county. The population density was 3.2 people per square mile (1.24/kmē), making it the eighth least densely populated county in Oregon. There were 11233 housing units at an average density of 1.1 per square mile (0.42/kmē). The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.28. In the county the population was spread out, with 27.6% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 116 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 121.2 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 30907, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 93.53% White, 1.45% Black or African American, 1.29% American Indian, 1.93% Asian, 0.19% Native Hawaiian, and 1.6% from two or more races.
