It is ranks 12 in the size of its inland waterways in United States.

For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males. The median age was 38.6 years, the median age of male residents at 37.6 and the median age of female residents at 39.6. In July 2008, its estimated population was 1274923, The racial makeup of the state was 96.95% White, 0.53% Black or African American, 0.56% American Indian, 0.71% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, 0.99% from two or more races and 0.23% Other races.
