Mahnomen County is a United States county located in the United States of Minnesota. As of 2000 the population was 5190. Its population was estimated at 5128 in July 2008, making it Minnesota's fifth smallest county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 582.99 square miles (1509.94 square kilometre), of which, 556.14 square miles (1440.4 square kilometre) of it is land and 26.85 square miles (69.54 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Minnesota's 59th largest county by total area.

The population density was 9.3 people per square mile (3.59/kmē), it would be the 11th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. There were 2700 housing units at an average density of 4.9 per square mile (1.89/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.6 persons, and the average family size was 3.14 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 29.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.4 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 5128, The racial makeup of the county was 58.07% White, 0.41% Black or African American, 31.71% American Indian, 0.12% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 9.67% from two or more races.
