Magoffin County is one of the 120 county of Kentucky, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 13332 as per the Census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 13151, giving it the 34th smallest population among Kentucky's county. The county encompasses an area of 309.44 mi˛ (801.45 square kilometre ), of which, 309.44 square miles (801.45 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 63rd largest by area in the U.S. state of Kentucky.


As of the census of 2000, there were 13332 people in the county, organized into 5024 households, and 3857 families living in the county. The population density was 43.1 people per square mile (16.64/km˛), it is Kentucky's 78th most densely populated county. There were 5447 housing units at an average density of 17.6 per square mile (6.8/km˛). The average household size was 2.62 persons, and the average family size was 3.04 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 26.8% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 102.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 105.9 females. The July 2008 population estimate is 13151, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 13032 White, 35 Black or African American, 27 American Indian, 11 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 46 from two or more races.
