Madison Parish is one of the 64 parish of Louisiana, located towards the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 13728 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the parish is 11790, It is the ninth least populous parish in the U.S. state of Louisiana. Its area is just over 650.53 square miles (1684.86 square kilometre), of which, 624.09 square miles (1616.39 square kilometre) of it is land and 26.45 square miles (68.51 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 39th largest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 22 people per square mile (8.49/kmē), it would be the seventh least densely populated parish in the U.S. state of Louisiana. There were 4979 housing units at an average density of 8 per square mile (3.09/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.74 persons, and the average family size was 3.35 persons. In the parish the population was spread out, with 32.6% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 103.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.6 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 11790, The racial or ethnic makeup of the parish was 37.25% White, 61.08% Black or African American, 0.18% American Indian, 0.19% Asian, 0.7% Native Hawaiian, and 0.6% from two or more races.
