According to the 2000 census it had a population of 11584 inhabitants. making it the 80th most populous in Virginia. It covers total area of 19.54 sq mi (50.61 sq km), of which, 19.28 square miles (49.93 sq km) of it is land and 0.25 square miles (0.65 sq km) of it is water, it is the 211th largest in terms of geographical size.
