Madison County is one of the 135 county of Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 12520 as per the Census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 13639, It is the 35th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Virginia. The county extends throughout a territory of 321.78 square miles (833.41 kmē ), of which, 321.42 square miles (832.47 kmē) of it is land and 0.36 square miles (0.93 kmē) of it is water, it is the 67th largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12520 people, 4739 households, and 3521 families residing in the county. The population density was 39 people per square mile (15.06/kmē), making it the 22nd least densely populated county in Virginia. There were 5239 housing units at an average density of 16.3 per square mile (6.29/kmē). The average household size was 2.6 persons, and the average family size was 3.03 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 24.1% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 15% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.6 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 13639, The racial makeup of the county was 11914 White, 1492 Black or African American, 22 American Indian, 74 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 134 from two or more races.
