Madison County is one of the 62 county of New York, located towards the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 69441 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 69766, making it the 37th most populous county in New York. It is spread over 661.54 mi˛ (1713.38 sq km), of which, 655.86 square miles (1698.67 sq km ) of it is land and 5.69 square miles (14.74 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 36th largest by total area in New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 69441 people in the county, organized into 25368 households, and 17577 families residing in the county. The population density was 105.9 people per square mile (40.89/km˛), it is 35th most densely populated county in New York. There were 28646 housing units at an average density of 43.7 per square mile (16.87/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.55 persons, and the average family size was 3.04 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.9% under the age of 18, 12% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.8 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 69766, The racial makeup of the county was 95.84% White, 1.82% Black or African American, 0.65% American Indian, 0.75% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.93% from two or more races.
