Its population was estimated at 34020 in July 2008, giving it the ninth largest population among Nebraska's county. It has total area of 575.05 sq mi (1489.37 square kilometre), of which, 572.57 square miles (1482.95 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.49 square miles (6.45 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 56th largest by total area in Nebraska.
