Madison County is a county in the United States of Illinois. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 258941 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 268078, making it the eighth most populous county in Illinois. The county encompasses an area of 740.35 sq mi (1917.5 square kilometre ), of which, 725.02 square miles (1877.79 square kilometre) of it is land and 15.33 square miles (39.7 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 20th largest by size in Illinois.

In the county Population was distributed with 24.9% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 268078, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 240259 White, 21823 Black or African American, 872 American Indian, 1831 Asian, 72 Native Hawaiian, and 3221 from two or more races.
