Madison City is a city located in the Madison County, Illinois, United States. In 2000, the population was 4545. The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 4554, making it the 337th most populous in Illinois. The city extends throughout a territory of 7.28 mi˛ (18.86 square kilometre ), of which, 7.01 square miles (18.16 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.27 square miles (0.7 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 130th largest by total area in Illinois.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 4545 residents, 1881 households, and 1117 families in the city. The population density was 648.3 people per square mile (250.31/km˛), it is the 317th least densely populated city in the U.S. state of Illinois. There were 2322 housing units at an average density of 331.2 per square mile (127.88/km˛). The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.13.
