Macoupin County, Illinois is a county of the United States of Illinois. In 2000, county's population was 49019 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 48138, It is Illinois's 31st most populous county. The county encompasses an area of 867.61 sq mi (2247.1 kmē ), of which, 863.57 square miles (2236.64 kmē) of it is land and 4.04 square miles (10.46 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 13th largest by total area in Illinois.


As of the census of 2000, there were 49019 people in the county, organized into 19253 households, and 13629 families residing in the county. The population density was 56.8 people per square mile (21.93/kmē), it is 46th most densely populated county in Illinois. There were 21097 housing units at an average density of 24.4 per square mile (9.42/kmē). The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.97. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.6% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.9 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 48138, The racial makeup of the county was 97.66% White, 1.07% Black or African American, 0.26% American Indian, 0.32% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.67% from two or more races.
