As of July 2008, the estimated population was 48138, It is Illinois's 31st most populous county. The county encompasses an area of 867.61 sq mi (2247.1 kmē ), of which, 863.57 square miles (2236.64 kmē) of it is land and 4.04 square miles (10.46 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 13th largest by total area in Illinois.
