Macon County is a United States county located in the United States of Tennessee. It is home to over 20386 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 21838, It is the 62nd largest county by population in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The county spans an area of 307.19 mi˛ (795.62 square kilometre), of which, 307.13 square miles (795.46 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 22nd smallest by area in the U.S. state of Tennessee.

The population density was 66.4 people per square mile (25.64/km˛), giving it the 46th most densely populated county among the Tennessee. In the county the population was spread out, with 26.1% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.1 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 21838, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.78% White, 0.85% Black or African American, 0.47% American Indian, 0.24% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 0.6% from two or more races.
