Macon County is a one of the county from North Carolina's 100 counties, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 29811. In July 2008, its estimated population was 33005, It is North Carolina's 33rd least populous county. Its area is just over 519.47 miē (1345.42 kmē), of which, 516.47 square miles (1337.65 kmē) of it is land and 3 square miles (7.77 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 45th largest by total area in North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 29811 people, 12828 households, and 8908 families residing in the county. The population density was 57.7 people per square mile (22.28/kmē), it is the 27th least populated county in terms of population density. There were 20746 housing units at an average density of 40.2 per square mile (15.52/kmē). The average household size was 2.28 people, and the average family size was 2.74 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 20.3% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 22.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 33005, The racial makeup of the county was 96.32% White, 1.82% Black or African American, 0.34% American Indian, 0.68% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.81% from two or more races.
