Macon County is a county located in Alabama, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Macon County is home to 24105 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 22290, It is the 22nd least populous county in the U.S. state of Alabama. The county comprises an area of 613.24 mi˛ (1588.28 square kilometre), of which, 610.52 square miles (1581.24 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.72 square miles (7.04 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 17th smallest by total area among Alabama's county.

Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 22290, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 15.76% White, 82.24% Black or African American, 0.19% American Indian, 0.98% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.82% from two or more races.
