Lyon County is a county in the United States of Kentucky. The population of the county was 8080 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 8245, It is the 13th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Kentucky. Its area is just over 256.42 square miles (664.12 square kilometre), of which, 215.7 square miles (558.66 square kilometre) of it is land and 40.71 square miles (105.44 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 37th smallest by size in Kentucky. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Kentucky.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8080 people, 2898 households, and 2043 families residing in the county. The population density was 37.5 people per square mile (14.48/kmē), it would be the 28th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kentucky. There were 4189 housing units at an average density of 19.4 per square mile (7.49/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.26 persons, and the average family size was 2.7 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 15.8% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 27% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 133.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 138.1 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 8245, The racial makeup of the county was 91.66% White, 7.05% Black or African American, 0.29% American Indian, 0.39% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.59% from two or more races.
