Lyman County is a county located in the United States of South Dakota. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 3895 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 3811, making it South Dakota's 42nd largest county. The county encompasses an area of 1707.06 mi˛ (4421.27 sq km ), of which, 1639.96 square miles (4247.48 sq km) of it is land and 67.1 square miles (173.79 sq km) of it is water, it is the 14th largest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3895 people in the county, organized into 1400 households, and 1010 families residing in the county. The population density was 2.4 people per square mile (0.93/km˛), it is the 12th least populated county in terms of population density. There were 1636 housing units at an average density of 1 per square mile (0.39/km˛). The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.29. In the county the population was spread out, with 32.1% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 104.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.1 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 3811, The racial makeup of the county was 58.91% White, 0.1% Black or African American, 38.68% American Indian, 0.24% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 2.07% from two or more races.
