Luzerne County is a United States county located in the United States of Pennsylvania. The population of the county was 319250 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 311983, It is the 12th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is spread over 907.13 mi˛ (2349.46 square kilometre), of which, 890.81 square miles (2307.19 square kilometre ) of it is land and 16.32 square miles (42.27 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Pennsylvania's 15th largest county by total area. It is ranks eighth in the size of its inland waterways in Pennsylvania.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 319250 people, 130687 households, and 84304 families residing in the county. The population density was 358.4 people per square mile (138.38/km˛), making its Pennsylvania's 17th most densely populated county. There were 144686 housing units at an average density of 162.4 per square mile (62.7/km˛). The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.95. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 21% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 311983, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 297736 White, 9069 Black or African American, 429 American Indian, 2444 Asian, 75 Native Hawaiian, and 2230 from two or more races.
