Lowndes County is a county located in the United States of Mississippi. It is home to over 61586 people (2000 census). The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 59284, It is the 11th most populous county in the U.S. state of Mississippi. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 516.45 mi˛ (1337.6 sq km), of which, 502.3 square miles (1300.95 sq km) of it is land and 14.15 square miles (36.65 sq km) of it is water, it is the 48th largest by area in the U.S. state of Mississippi.

The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 59284, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 54.96% White, 43.25% Black or African American, 0.19% American Indian, 0.62% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.96% from two or more races.
