Lowndes County is one of the 67 county of Alabama, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 13473 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 12644, It is fifth least populous county in Alabama. Its area is just over 725.03 sq mi (1877.82 square kilometre), of which, 717.94 square miles (1859.46 square kilometre) of it is land and 7.1 square miles (18.39 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 29th largest by size in Alabama.

The population density was 18.8 people per square mile (7.26/kmē), it would be the tenth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Alabama. There were 5801 housing units at an average density of 8.1 per square mile (3.13/kmē). The average household size was 2.73 people, and the average family size was 3.28 people. The population's age distribution was 30.2% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.9 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 12644, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 3733 White, 8794 Black or African American, 18 American Indian, 15 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 81 from two or more races.
