Lovington City is a city located in Lea County, New Mexico, in the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 9471. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 9975, It is the 23rd largest in terms of population. It covers total area of 4.79 square miles (12.41 kmē), of which, 4.77 square miles (12.35 kmē) of it is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 kmē) of it is water, making it New Mexico's 108th largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9471 people in the city, organized into 457 households, and 284 families residing in the city. The population density was 1983.6 people per square mile (765.87/kmē), giving it the fourth most densely populated city among the New Mexico. There were 3823 housing units at an average density of 801.5 per square mile (309.46/kmē). The average household size was 2.8 persons, and the average family size was 3.29 persons. Age range in the city was well distributed with 31.8% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males. The median age is 30.6 years, the median age of male residents at 29.1 and the median age of female residents at 32.1. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 5668 White, 287 Black or African American, 74 American Indian, 45 Asian, 6 Native Hawaiian, 290 from two or more races and 3101 Ohter races.
