Louisiana is one of the state of United States, located towards the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 4468976. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the state is 4410796, It is the 22nd most populous in the U.S. state of America. The state spans an area of 51839.7 sq mi (134264.21 kmē), of which, 43561.85 square miles (112824.67 kmē) of it is land and 8277.85 square miles (21439.53 kmē) of it is water, it is the 31st largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in United States.

The population density was 102.6 people per square mile (39.61/kmē), making it the 22nd most densely populated state in United States. There were 1847181 housing units at an average density of 42.4 per square mile (16.37/kmē). The average household size was 2.62 persons, and the average family size was 3.16 persons. In the Louisiana, 27.3% of the population was under the age of 18, 10.6% were 18 to 24, 28.9% were 25 to 44, 21.6% were 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 males. The median age was 34 years, The median age of males was 32.6 years, for females the median age was 35.3 years.
