In July 2008, its estimated population was 32716, It is Virginia's 53rd most populous county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 510.79 square miles (1322.94 square kilometre), of which, 497.14 square miles (1287.59 square kilometre) of it is land and 13.65 square miles (35.35 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 24th largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.
