According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 18150, It is 22nd most populous county in New Mexico. It is spread over 109.35 mi˛ (283.22 sq km), giving it the smallest by total area among New Mexico's county.

The population density was 167.8 people per square mile (64.79/km˛), making it the second most densely populated county in New Mexico. In the Los Alamos County, 25.8% of the population was under the age of 18, 4.4% were 18 to 24, 27.7% were 25 to 44, 30% were 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 or older.
