Lorain County is one of the 88 county of Ohio, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 284664. In July 2008, its estimated population was 304373, making it Ohio's ninth largest county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 923.02 square miles (2390.61 square kilometre), of which, 492.5 square miles (1275.57 square kilometre) of it is land and 430.52 square miles (1115.04 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the fourth largest by total area in Ohio. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in Ohio.

As of the census of 2000, there were 284664 residents, 105836 households, and 76192 families in the county. The population density was 578 people per square mile (223.17/kmē), making its Ohio's 11th most densely populated county. There were 111368 housing units at an average density of 226.1 per square mile (87.3/kmē). The average household size was 2.61 people, and the average family size was 3.08 people. The population's age distribution was 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.6 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 304373, The racial makeup of the county was 268484 White, 26309 Black or African American, 1041 American Indian, 2697 Asian, 148 Native Hawaiian, and 5694 from two or more races.
