Its population was estimated at 46220 in July 2008, It is the 52nd largest in terms of population. It is spread over 466.78 mi˛ (1208.95 square kilometre), of which, 458.44 square miles (1187.35 square kilometre ) of it is land and 8.34 square miles (21.6 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Ohio's 41st largest county by total area.

The population density was 100.4 people per square mile (38.76/km˛), it is the 52nd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Ohio. There were 21571 housing units at an average density of 47.1 per square mile (18.19/km˛). The average household size was 2.53 persons, and the average family size was 3.01 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.6 males. Its population was estimated at 46220 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 44193 White, 866 Black or African American, 128 American Indian, 339 Asian, 13 Native Hawaiian, and 681 from two or more races.
