Its population was estimated at 91220 in July 2008, giving it the eighth largest population among Michigan. The city encompasses an area of 35.84 square miles (92.83 kmē ), of which, 35.72 square miles (92.51 kmē) of it is land and 0.12 square miles (0.31 kmē) of it is water, makes it the eighth largest by total area in Michigan.
