Litchfield County is a county located in Connecticut, in the Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 182193 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 187745, It is the fifth most populous county in the U.S. state of Connecticut. The county comprises an area of 944.57 miē (2446.43 kmē), of which, 919.92 square miles (2382.58 kmē) of it is land and 24.65 square miles (63.84 kmē) of it is water, it is the largest by area in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Connecticut.

The population density was 198.1 people per square mile (76.49/kmē), it is the least populated county in terms of population density. There were 79267 housing units at an average density of 86.2 per square mile (33.28/kmē). The average household size was 2.51 persons, and the average family size was 3.03 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 24.6% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 187745, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.47% White, 1.68% Black or African American, 0.23% American Indian, 1.6% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1% from two or more races.
