Lincoln County is one of the 66 county of South Dakota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 24131. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 39713, It is the third largest county by population in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It has total area of 578.59 square miles (1498.54 square kilometre), of which, 578.09 square miles (1497.25 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.29 square kilometre) of it is water, making it South Dakota's 15th smallest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 24131 people in the county, organized into 8782 households, and 6669 families residing in the county. The population density was 41.7 people per square mile (16.1/kmē), it is third most densely populated county in South Dakota. There were 9131 housing units at an average density of 15.8 per square mile (6.1/kmē). The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.14. In the county Age distribution was 29.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 100.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 102.6 females. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 39713, The racial makeup of the county was 97.06% White, 0.69% Black or African American, 0.72% American Indian, 0.7% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.81% from two or more races.
