Lewis County is a county in the United States of West Virginia. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 16919 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17281, It is the 33rd most populous county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The county spans an area of 389.75 square miles (1009.45 kmē), of which, 382.14 square miles (989.74 kmē) of it is land and 7.61 square miles (19.71 kmē) of it is water, it is the 30th largest by area in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in West Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16919 people in the county, organized into 6946 households, and 4805 families residing in the county. The population density was 44.3 people per square mile (17.1/kmē), it is the 34th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. There were 7944 housing units at an average density of 20.8 per square mile (8.03/kmē). The average household size was 2.4 and the average family size was 2.88. In the county the population was spread out, with 22.1% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 17281, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 17000 White, 45 Black or African American, 41 American Indian, 55 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 140 from two or more races.
