Lewis County is a county located in New York, in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 26944 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 26176, It is fourth least populous county in New York. It has total area of 1289.89 sq mi (3340.8 square kilometre), of which, 1275.42 square miles (3303.32 square kilometre) of it is land and 14.47 square miles (37.48 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 15th largest by area in the U.S. state of New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 26944 people in the county, organized into 10040 households, and 7307 families residing in the county. The population density was 21.1 people per square mile (8.15/kmē), it is New York's second least densely populated county. There were 15134 housing units at an average density of 11.9 per square mile (4.59/kmē). The average household size was 2.66 persons, and the average family size was 3.12 persons. The population's age distribution was 27.8% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.6 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 26176, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 25617 White, 241 Black or African American, 90 American Indian, 59 Asian, 17 Native Hawaiian, and 152 from two or more races.
