Lewis County is one of the 120 county of Kentucky, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 14092. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 13807, It is the 81st largest in terms of population. The county has a total area of 495.7 square miles (1283.86 kmē), of which, 484.49 square miles (1254.82 kmē) of it is land and 11.21 square miles (29.03 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 13th largest by total area in Kentucky.

As of the census of 2000, there were 14092 people, 5422 households, and 4049 families living in the county. The population density was 29.1 people per square mile (11.24/kmē), it is ninth least densely populated county in Kentucky. There were 6173 housing units at an average density of 12.7 per square mile (4.9/kmē). The average household size was 2.56 people, and the average family size was 2.98 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 101.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 103 females. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 13807, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 98.65% White, 0.47% Black or African American, 0.22% American Indian, 0.04% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.61% from two or more races.
