It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Montana.

As of the census of 2000, there were 55716 residents, 22850 households, and 14958 families in the county. The population density was 16.1 people per square mile (6.22/kmē), making its Montana's seventh most densely populated county. There were 25672 housing units at an average density of 7.4 per square mile (2.86/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.38 persons, and the average family size was 2.95 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.6% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 60925, The racial makeup of the county was 58019 White, 227 Black or African American, 1286 American Indian, 374 Asian, 36 Native Hawaiian, and 983 from two or more races.
