In July 2008, its estimated population was 23890, It is Kentucky's 50th most populous county. It is spread over 339.12 square miles (878.32 sq km), of which, 339.04 square miles (878.11 sq km ) of it is land and 0.07 square miles (0.18 sq km) of it is water, making it Kentucky's 55th largest county by total area.

For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 23890, The racial makeup of the county was 98.43% White, 0.63% Black or African American, 0.11% American Indian, 0.3% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.51% from two or more races.
